Shooting deemed accidental
IRON RIVER – An Iron County man was treated and released Saturday from Northstar Hospital in Iron River after he accidentally shot himself in the leg with a gun he was cleaning.
Iron County Sheriff’s deputies said the incident took place at noon CDT Saturday near the Perch River, along Forest Road 2130 in Bates Township.
Police said Nicholas Kegley, 32, of Iron River, was cleaning a .22-caliber pistol while waiting in his vehicle for a friend. Police said Kegley and friends had been camping and hunting together in northern Bates Township.
Kegley told police the slide had been sticking on the pistol. As he waited for his friend, Kegley decided to use the time to clean his gun. In doing so, Kegley unintentionally chambered a live cartridge and discharged the firearm, police said in a news release.
Deputies said the bullet struck Kegley in the upper left leg and then lodged in the driver’s side door of his vehicle.
Police have closed their investigation into the incident, determining the shooting to be accidental.
