NMU volleyball: Wildcats win third straight match

FINDLAY, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team won for the third straight time, posting its eighth 3-0 shutout this season at GLIAC foe Findlay University on Saturday afternoon.

The Wildcats improved to 12-4 overall and 6-1 in conference with a 27-25, 25-21, 25-17 victory.

With 10 earlier ties at the start of the match, NMU trailed 25-24 in the first set before Northern senior Lina Lopes recorded a kill to tie the score again, while consecutive kills by freshman Alex Larsen and senior Kalli Herron put the ‘Cats over the top.

Findlay (11-5, 4-3) jumped out to a 15-8 lead in the second set before NMU came back, taking the lead for good at 22-21 on a kill by sophomore Lisa Studnicka and clinching the win with two kills by Hamilton and another by Studnicka.

The Wildcats led wire to wire in the final set, Herron notching the final kill to end the match.

Lopes finished with 10 kills, while Larsen, Hamilton and Herron had nine each. Lopes led the defense with 14 digs and sophomore Alex Berger had 12, while Harley set up the offense with 38 assists.

NMU held a 52-34 edge in kills as the Oilers’ Danielle Taflinger had nine.

Northern wraps up this four-match road trip at No. 2 Minnesota-Duluth on Tuesday before hosting GLIAC foes Malone on Friday and Walsh on Saturday.
