NMU notebook: Wildcats soccer, volleyball teams post GLIAC wins
TIFFIN, Ohio – The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team extended its unbeaten streak to three games Friday via a 4-1 win at Tiffin to improve to 2-0-1 in the GLIAC.
Northern (2-5-1 overall), coming off a 3-0 home win over Lake Erie on Sept. 22 and a 1-1 tie at Michigan Tech on Tuesday, scored four goals in 14 minutes in the second half after falling 1-0 in the first half when the Dragons scored off a corner kick.
NMU sophomore Gabriella Garza set up sophomore Ashley Katers in the 52nd minute to tie the game at 1-1 while junior Taylor Smith scored the game-winner five minutes later unassisted.
Wildcats freshman forward Paula Hafner set up the next two scores, feeding freshman Wynona Maraville for her first collegiate goal in the 61st minute and sophomore Helen Hillunen for her first goal as a Wildcat in the 65th minute.
NMU freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons earned her second collegiate win by making two saves.
Up next for NMU is a noon contest on Sunday at Findlay.
Volleyball topples Wayne State
DETROIT – The NMU volleyball team improved to 11-4 overall and 5-1 in the GLIAC with a four-set 25-18, 20-25, 25-20, 25-23, victory over Wayne State in Detroit.
Senior Kalli Herron led the Wildcats with 14 kills, senior Lina Lopes posted 11 and senior Sarah Hamilton had nine.
NMU senior setter Kellisha Harley had 37 assists and sophomore libero Alex Berger finished with 18 digs.
Hamilton also had five block assists and Lopes added 12 digs to her stat line.
NMU continues GLIAC play today in Ohio against Findlay at 2 p.m.
Hockey opens exhibition play today
The Wildcat hockey team begins the 2013-14 season tonight with a 7:07 p.m. exhibition against the USA Hockey National Team Development Program Under-18 squad at the Berry Events Center.
At 2 p.m. on Sunday, the Wildcats host Laurentian in a final exhibition at the BEC before opening the regular season Oct. 11-12 in Madison, Wis., against the Wisconsin Badgers.
The 2013-14 USNTDP U18s enter the weekend on a five-game winning streak against programs from the Tier I USHL, outscoring the top-level American junior programs 26-6.
Of the 22 players currently on the USNTDP U18 roster, 20 are already committed to playing for NCAA Division I hockey programs. Ryan Hitchcock, a Yale commitment, leads the USNTDP U18s in points with three goals and seven assists.
Laurentian University of Sudbury, Ontario is winless in seven exhibitions against NMU and was the first team to ever play the ‘Cats at the Berry Events Center. That 1999 contest that NMU won 20-2 was the last time the two teams met.
Laurentian plays at Michigan Tech tonight and plays at Lake Superior State on Oct. 29.
