Prep tennis: Ishpeming fends off WIC’s challenge
ISHPEMING – Ishpeming won a trio of close matches, sweeping the singles and earning one doubles flight to edge West Iron County, 5-3, in high school girls tennis on Monday afternoon.
“We matched up well with West Iron competitively,” Hematites coach Erl Langness said as both teams will participate in Wednesday’s MHSAA Upper Peninsula Division 2 finals at Ishpeming, Westwood and Negaunee.
Two of the victories for Ishpeming (6-7) went to three sets, while another had a pair of tight scores in the two-set sweep.
Ishpeming No. 3 singles player Jessica Penhale scored a 2-6, 6-0, 6-3 comeback win over WIC’s Kiki Piwarski, while Hematites No. 1 doubles pair of Libbie Doney and Hailly Thompson outlasted the Wykons’ Meg Miatech and Allie Schive, 7-5, 1-6, 10-6, with a third-set pro-style tiebreaker.
In addition, IHS No. 4 singles player Lindsey Thompson beat WIC’s Jessie Prudhomme, 7-6 (7-1), 7-5.
The Wykons’ closest victory was at No. 3 doubles, where Alexis Golfis and Kristin Smith managed a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win over Ishpeming’s Krista Almli and Katie Harrison.
