Muriel E. (King) Downs

ISHPEMING, MI. – Muriel E. (King) Downs, 90, returned to the Lord on Thursday afternoon, September 26, 2013 at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she had resided for the past 6 1/2 years in the loving presence of family and the wonderful staff, who provided her excellent and compassionate care, and to whom she endeared herself with her continuous smile and sweet personality. Prior to that, she had resided at 1405 N. Second St. in Ishpeming, since 1987, when she moved to Ishpeming from Marquette to be near her daughter.

Muriel was born on April 30, 1923 in Marquette, to the late Florence E. (Coady) King and Henry J. King, Sr. She was a 1940 graduate of Bishop Baraga High School in Marquette, and prior to her marriage worked at Sears, as a secretary at Lake Shore, Inc. in Marquette, and as the secretary to the warden at the Marquette Branch Prison.

In 1949 she married the late John R. Downs Sr., who was a local electrical contractor. When her four children were all in school, she returned to work in the offices of Spear and Sons in Marquette, Dahlke Oil Co., and finally as a secretary for Eastern U.P. Substance Abuse Services in Marquette, until her retirement in 1987.

She also did the bookkeeping for the family businesses.

Muriel was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming where she belonged to the ladies guild.

Muriel was a very dedicated mother, homemaker, grandmother, and care provider to her own mother until her death in 1985. She was known to be a hard worker no matter what the job was.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a sister Evelina (King) Madigan, a brother Henry J. King Jr., as well as her aunts, uncles, several cousins, and two nieces.

She is survived by her daughter, Mary C. (Bruce) Turino of Ishpeming, and her three sons, John R. Downs, Jr.(Kathy) of Chocolay Township, Daniel K. Downs (Laurie) of Boise, Idaho, and Kevin J. Downs of Skandia. She is also survived by her grandchildren, Brandon J. (Mercedes) Turino, Hayley A. Turino, Ashley M. (Evan) Bergstrom, Tyler J. Downs, Michael R. Downs, Kayla B. Downs, Cullen J. Downs, Killian R. Downs, and Josephine M. Downs, as well as 3 great-grandchildren.

Friends may call at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Ishpeming on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 from 10:00 am until 11:00 am. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated in the church on Wednesday at 11:00 am with Rev. Daniel Moll officiating. A luncheon will follow in the church hall. Burial will be in the Holy Cross Cemetery.
