Prep football: Late interception seals win for Munising against Manistique
MANISTIQUE – Finishing late drives continued to be a problem for the Manistique Emeralds on Friday night as they dropped a 26-21 football decision to the Munising Mustangs.
The Emeralds moved the ball inside the Munising 30-yard line with 40 seconds left in the non-conference contest.
But the Mustangs sealed the deal with an interception on their 15, making Manistique 0-for-3 on final drives this season.
“They (the Mustangs) aren’t bad,” Emeralds coach Todd Kangas said, “although, we had some chances. We have one kid (Tony Floyd) out for the year, but everyone else is back.”
Munising (2-3) scored the game-winner on a 25-yard run by Austin Kelto with 4:03 left to play, setting the stage for Manistique’s last chance.
The Mustangs opened the scoring on a 21-yard pass from Kelto to Ben Stasewich with 8:27 left in the first quarter, then raised the count to 14-0 just 23 seconds later.
Manistique (0-5) climbed to within 14-8 on a two-yard pass from Tyler Kangas to Mike Brock with 2:31 left in the opening frame, then tied the score on a seven-yard run by Austin Miller with :37 remaining in the first.
The Emeralds’ second score was set up on a fumble recovery just 39 seconds earlier.
Munising regained the lead at 20-14 on a 1-yard run by Kelto midway through the second.
