Prep girls tennis: Munising, Westwood lose on road

GLADSTONE – The Gladstone Braves swept the singles matches and won the top three flights in doubles Thursday, gaining a 7-1 girls’ tennis victory over the Munising Mustangs.

Gladstone’s Paige Schwartz and Melissa Casey won a three-set match in No. 1 doubles, taking a 6-3, 1-6, 6-1 decision from Alex Paquette and Adele Gendron.

No. 3 doubles was also competitive with Gladstone’s Carly DeVet and Paige Cavadeas topping Sydney McInnis-Bailey Downs 7-6, 7-6.

Munising got on the board with a win at No. 4 doubles where Morgan Flynn-Leah Werner outlasted Ashley Lektzian-Hailey Bedard 3-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Westwood 2

IRON MOUNTAIN – Abby Theisen dominated at No. 3 singles and Iron Mountain beat Westwood 6-2 Thursday in a tune-up for next week’s MHSAA U.P. Division 2 girls tennis meet.

Mountaineer coach Greg Stegall considered the match more of scrimmage with Westwood sending out a revised lineup.

Theisen downed the Patriots’ Maddy Mattias 6-0, 6-3.

Iron Mountain No. 1 singles Katie Brule posted a 6-3, 6-0 score on Katie Rankinen, who teamed with Shana Caliguri to win the Mid-Peninsula Conference No. 1 doubles on Wednesday.

Mountaineers also triumphed at No. 2 singles with Olivia Truscott, No. 2 doubles Kate and Emily Bugni, and No. 3 doubles Cayla Carey-Kathryn Brown.
