Broken pipe may be behind Sawyer school sewer woes

MARQUETTE – A sewer pipe blockage at K.I. Sawyer Elementary School is proving to be more cumbersome than anyone expected as work to fix it continues.

Interim Superintendent Stephen Piereson said Monday that Beauchamp Plumbing and Heating of Gwinn will likely have to replace the section of blocked pipe.

“They believe the pipe is actually broken,” Piereson said.

The blocked section is only affecting sinks in the fifth and sixth grade wing of the building, along with a sink in the custodial closet.

Piereson said the floor in that wing will have to be removed and the pipe excavated and replaced, with compact sand placed around the pipe, concrete poured on top of that and then the flooring replaced.

Piereson said the work is scheduled to begin the evening of Oct. 10 and finish at the end of the day Oct. 11, when kids will not be in school.

Piereson said a cost estimate for the project had not been completed as of Monday.
