MAPS to discuss grade alignment
MARQUETTE – Grade alignment and strategic planning are on the agenda again for the Marquette Area Public Schools Board of Education.
The meeting is scheduled to take place at 5:30 p.m. inside the Marquette Senior High School library.
In August, the district’s Strategic Planning Facilities Subcommittee offered its grade alignment proposal to the board, which has taken no action on a new grade alignment since.
The proposal, which would take effect in 2014, would utilize all the district’s current elementary schools – Cherry Creek, Sandy Knoll and Superior Hills – along with the Graveraet School as kindergarten through fifth grade buildings.
Bothwell Middle School would house sixth through eighth grades and Marquette Senior High School would house ninth through 12th grade.
This configuration would also move the Marquette Alternative High School out of the Graveraet building over to the Vandenboom Early Child Development Center, which would displace the Marquette County YMCA’s early childhood development program.
The board will also discuss some of the many capital projects it has outlined to take place over the next several years.
The board will look at plans to repave the Sandy Knoll parking lot, and fix structural problems with the high school’s pool.
The estimated cost of fixing the problem in the pool – which includes installing a new gutter system, replacing the tile at the pool deck and repairing the pool walls – is $276,530, according to a report written by Integrated Design, Inc., of Marquette.
