NMU cross country: Wildcat runners dominate

HOUGHTON – The Northern Michigan University women’s cross country team scored a perfect 15 – sweeping the top five spots – at the Pre-GLIAC Meet held at Michigan Tech on Saturday.

Seven of the top eight runners were Wildcats.

NMU sophomore Mary Kate Cirelli (23:56.3) won the race and was the only runner under 24 minutes.

Junior Olivia Howard (24:07.2), sophomore Megan Edic (24:11.3), senior Jordyn Ross (24:20.9) and junior Christina Toogood (24:25.6) finished in spots two-through-five.

“The team ran very strong today,” NMU coach Jenny Ryan said. “They improved on their times on the same course the GLIAC Championship will be held.

“We’ve seen a lot of improvement over the first couple meets so far this season.”

Wildcat juniors Larissa Halonen (24:35.3) and Chelsea Farquhar (24:40.9) placed seventh and eighth.

Lake Superior State (59), Michigan Tech (64) and Gogebic (114) finished behind NMU at the race.
