Prep boys soccer: Marquette defeats Lakeland Union in Wisconsin, 3-1
MINOCQUA, Wis. – The Marquette Senior High School boys soccer team broke a 1-1 halftime tie with goals by junior Andrew Banitt and sophomore Lehomm Pickard about 17 minutes apart in the second half, en route to a 3-1 win over Lakeland Union (Wis.) on Friday.
Marquette opened the scoring near the midpoint of the first half when Banitt, standing 25 yards from the goal, took a pass from senior Chris Amundsen and immediately turned and shot. The ball richocheted off the crossbar, then the Lakeland netminder’s back and in.
LU tied it five minutes before halftime on a penalty kick that eluded Marquette senior goalie Tony Lackey.
Banitt scored his second-half goal off a free kick from senior Craig Ekstrum, while Pickard picked off a goalie save of a shot by Amundsen.
The Redmen collected 27 shots, 14 of them on goal, while Lackey had eight saves as Lakeland had 18 total shots.
