NMU volleyball: Wildcats open homecoming, GLIAC play with sweep of Saginaw Valley State

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team opened homecoming weekend and GLIAC play with a tight, three-set 27-25, 25-22, 27-25 victory over Saginaw Valley State at Vandament Arena on Friday.

The Wildcats (7-3 overall, 1-0 in GLIAC) take on Lake Superior State (0-5 overall, 0-1 in GLIAC) at 1 p.m. today after sweeping the Lakers a week ago, 25-14, 25-23, 25-18, in nonconference play during the Wildcat Open.

LSSU is coming off a five-set loss at Michigan Tech on Friday, 19-25, 25-18, 25-10, 21-25, 15-11, in its GLIAC opener.

Against SVSU, senior outside hitter Lina Lopes led NMU with a team-high 15 kills. Freshman outside hitter Alex Larson had 12 kills and senior middle hitter Sarah Hamilton had 11.

NMU senior setter Kellisha Harley totaled 44 assists while sophomore libero Alex Berger led the defensive effort with 13 digs.

The Cardinals were led by junior Ashley Driscoll’s 11 kills. Junior Kelsey Ferla had 10 kills for SVSU.
