Prep girls tennis: Negaunee closes out home slate with victory over Munising

NEGAUNEE – Playing their final match ever at the current Negaunee High School tennis courts, the Miners posted an 8-0 victory over Munising on Thursday.

“This was our final girls’ match at these courts, so it was a good way to cap our home meets,” NHS head coach Kyle Saari said after his team improved to 11-0 in dual meets this season.

Negaunee netters are preparing to compete on new courts set to be constructed at the north end of the NHS parking lot in time for the 2014 girls’ season.

All eight matches against Munising were decided in straight sets Thursday.

Allison Carlson led the way at No. 1 singles. She blanked Sadie Cornish, 6-0, 6-0.

Kylee Taavola and Hanna Kantola of Negaunee shut out Munising’s No. 1 doubles tandem of Ariana Martineau and Gabi Koenig, 6-0, 6-0.

“Our No. 3 doubles (Elly Kantola and Lauren Anderson) have been quietly improving, too” Saari said after the duo stopped Leah Werner and Morgan Flynn, 6-1, 6-2.
