Elaine M. Juidici

GWINN, MI. – Elaine M. Juidici, 84, of Bertrand Lake Rd., Gwinn, died peacefully at home at 12:20 am on Friday, September 13, 2013.

Elaine was born March 31, 1929 in Ishpeming to Henry ‘Peg’ and Elma (Kangas) Hill and graduated From Negaunee High School, Class of 1947. Following graduation and years of amateur figure skating throughout the UP, she moved to Oregon. There she began a career as a professional figure skater with The Ice Follies in California and Oregon.

After returning to Negaunee she met Peter Juidici and they married in April of 1950. They had three children. During the course of raising them, Elaine attended Northern Michigan University earning both a Bachelor’s and Master’s degree. She taught school for the Negaunee Public Schools for 25 years beginning in 1962 and retiring in 1987, teaching in both, Palmer and Negaunee.

Elaine also pursued a career in local politics and was elected to the Negaunee City Council in 1974 and became the first woman mayor in 1977. She departed the City Council in 1978 to serve on the Marquette County Board for several terms. During this time she participated in the Democratic Party and was a delegate to local and state conventions.

Her involvement in the community also included being a member and president of BPW and also a member of the MEA. Elaine was the chairperson of the Negaunee City/School Recreation Commission. She was instrumental in fundraising and development of the Negaunee Ice Arena and served as its first manager.

Before and after her retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling to Alaska and Europe. Elaine was part of the Marquette Sister Cities delegation and traveled to Japan.

Throughout her life Elaine was an avid sportswoman participating in skating, skiing, tennis, volleyball, and softball. In her retirement she began golfing and ran the ladies league at the Red Fox Golf Course for many years. She brought the Susan Koman Foundation Rally for the Cure to the course as a cancer fund raiser.

Elaine had an abundance of interests: she practiced yoga, was an avid reader, photographer, bird watcher, dog lover and indoor gardener. She truly enjoyed life.

Surviving are her daughter, Catherine (Albert) Pirkola of Iron Mountain; 2 sons: Robert (Patricia) Juidici of Negaunee and Richard Juidici of Gwinn; 5 grandchildren: Erin and Robert (Casey) Pirkola, and Taryn, Anthony and Angelina Juidici; a sister, Dorothy (James) Collins of Marquette; a brother, Richard (Betty) Hill of Negaunee; a sister-in-law, Pauline Hill of Kingsford; numerous nieces, nephews and cousins; and her dog, Kylie.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Peter R. Juidici on May 5, 2008; a brother, Robert Hill; and a nephew, Dr. Robert ‘Bobbie’ Hill.

A memorial service will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 18th at the Koskey Funeral Home with Rev. Douglas E. Mater officiating. Interment will be in the Gwinn Cemetery. The family will greet relatives and friends for one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Wednesday.
