NMU soccer: Wildcats fall to 0-5 with loss to Bemidji State

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team lost its second game in four days on Sunday, falling to Bemidji State (Minn.) University, 3-1, at the NMU Soccer Field.

The Wildcats, now 0-5, got their goal just before the 75-minute mark on a shot by freshman Carmen Villarruel, her first at NMU and the team’s second this season. Fellow freshman Paula Hafner got the assist after passing the ball to Villarruel from a corner kick.

But BSU had already built a 3-0 lead by that point with goals by Mary O’Brien, Abigail Nyquist and Bayly Ertl.

Northern finished with 12 shots, nine of them on goal, while the Beavers managed just nine shots and six on goal. NMU freshman goalkeeper Alexandra Simmons started for the first time and had three saves.

The Wildcats opens GLIAC play at noon Sunday when Lake Erie College visits Marquette.
