NMU volleyball: Northern defends home court, wins Wildcat Open
MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University completed a four-match sweep of its Superior Oasis Wildcat Open by defeating Lake Superior State and Quincy University at Vandament Arena on Saturday.
The Wildcats (6-2) swept U.P. and GLIAC rival LSSU in a nonconference on Saturday night, 25-14, 25-23, 25-18, after taking out Quincy in four sets, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, 25-22, in the early afternoon.
Northern senior outside hitter Kalli Herron had 11 kills and senior middle hitter Sarah Hamilton 10 as they made just one error between them. Herron also had a team-high three block assists while adding a service ace and dig. Senior outside hitter Lina Lopes added a Wildcat-best nine digs as senior setter Kellisha Harley had 32 assists.
LSSU was paced by Jen Marren with eight kills, though the Lakers made three times as many attack errors, 24-8.
Against Quincy, Lopes made a team-high 16 kills, while Herron had 15 and sophomore outside hitter Lisa Studnicka totaled 14. Lopes also led the team with 12 digs and senior defensive specialist Suzy Solin added 10, while Harley made 46 assists and four service aces. Quincy’s Briann Joslin made 12 kills.
Quincy was the lone opponent to take NMU beyond three sets after the ‘Cats swept both Bemidji State and Minnesota-Crookston on Friday.
