Highway projects nearing completion

SOUTH RANGE – A construction project on M-26 in South Range, which began in mid-June, is winding down as is another project in Laurium.

Al Anderson, construction engineer with the Michigan Department of Transportation service center in Ishpeming, said the South Range project involves a stretch of M-26 that runs to Trimountain.

“We’re flattening a curve so it’s not as sharp,” he said. “(The safety division) identified it as an area that needed improvement.”

Anderson said the project is funded by a $1.1 million federal grant. The contractor is MJO Contracting of Hancock Township.

He said paving should begin soon on the South Range project and when it does, traffic will be controlled by flagging. The project is expected to be completed by the end of September.

In Laurium, Anderson said the section of M-26 that runs through the village is being reconstructed. The work is also being done by MJO Contracting. It should be completed by the end of October.
