Prep tennis roundup: Singles sweep just enough for Negaunee against Iron Mountain
NEGAUNEE – A sweep of singles provided just enough cushion for Negaunee to edge Iron Mountain, 5-3, in a high school girls tennis match played at the Miners’ courts on Thursday.
Negaunee, now a perfect 8-0 this season, also got a victory from its No. 1 doubles tandem of Amanda Washnock and Jessa Johnson as the Mountaineers swept the other doubles matches.
The Miners’ toughest wins came at the top of the singles draw, with No. 1 Allison Carlson defeating Katie Brule, 6-4, 6-3, and No. 2 Abbi Kill downing Olivia Truscott, 6-3, 6-2.
“Ally and Abbi played real solid today against two good players,” Negaunee coach Kyle Saari said. “We didn’t play too bad for having a few rainouts.”
The only three-set match came at No. 4 doubles, where IM’s Hannah Hakamaki and Grace Hansen outlasted April Walimaa and Kassy Harsila, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2.
Marquette splits with Marinette, Menominee
At Menominee, the Redettes defeated Marinette, Wis., 6-1, while falling to Menominee, 5-3.
Amanda Gray, Brenna Leafers and Aubrey Reynolds-Erspamer won at singles against Marinette, as did doubles teammates Laura Slavsky and Mackenzie Verbeke, Brianna Buhl and Ramina Mikhael, and Taylor Rovin and Madison Rieboldt.
In the Menominee match, only Slavsky won for Marquette in singles, though the tandems of Buhl and Rovin, along with Leafers and Reynolds-Erspamer, also got victories.
