Prep girls tennis: Westwood blanks Gwinn in rain-shortened win

GWINN – Filling in for an injured teammate at the top singles spot, Megan Chapman led the Westwood High School girls tennis team to a rain-shortened 5-0 victory over host Gwinn Wednesday.

The Patriots were leading in the three matches not completed due to rain.

Chapman, substituting for the injured Caitlin Hewitt at No. 1 singles, outlasted the Modeltowners’ Brooke Luokkala, 4-6, 6-0, 10-6.

“It’s Megan’s first win at No. 1 singles, “Westwood head coach Chris Jackson said. “We’ll be looking for some players to step up after possibly losing Caitlin (for some time).”

Rachel Anderson also posted a singles win for the Patriots, that coming at No. 3.

At No. 1 doubles, Westwood’s Katie Rankinen and Shana Caliguri toppled Anja Wiedenhoefer and Nastya Nikulina, 6-0, 6-1.

“Katie and Shana are starting to raise their game to another level at the perfect time of the season,” Jackson said.

Gabby Hebert and Bridget Wood at No. 2 doubles, and Jamie Ferris and Breanna Misale at No. 4, also won for the Patriots.

Gwinn had a meet earlier in the week against Ishpeming rained out and wet weather washed out a meet against Iron Mountain at the beginning of the season as well.

Gwinn head coach Darcia Mattson said the weather has been tough on the team.

“It’s hard on the girls who want to play and put in so much effort,” Mattson said. “A meet with Iron Mountain was cancelled earlier in the season, and we were rained out in Ishpeming yesterday. We host Gladstone on Thursday, and of course, rain is predicted.

“I’m just hoping that it doesn’t snow,” Mattson added about the Mid-Peninsula Conference meet at the end of the month.
