Bernhardt Charles “Ben” Nyman
HOUGHTON, MI. – Bernhardt Charles “Ben” Nyman, 93, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2013 at the Houghton County Medical Care Facility after a brief illness. He was born on December 16, 1919 in Ishpeming and grew up in Cleveland Location. Ben and his family moved to Houghton in 1962.
He is survived by his wife of 62 years, June (Corlett), his sister Ruth (Salvatore) Sarvello of Ishpeming, children Jill (James) Botz of Green Bay, Wisconsin, Janet (Richard) Delecke of Rochester, Michigan, Ben of Davenport, Iowa and Brett of Frederick, Maryland, grandchildren Lindsey (Nate) Rykal, Kyle (Cayla) Botz, Grant Botz, Hope (Rory) Sackreiter, Richard Delecke III, Brett Nyman and Katherine Nyman, six great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his sisters Lempi (George) Vanderbent, Lillian (Vince) Miller, Helen (Harold) Hoiem, and brothers Waino, Eino, Raino and Arne.
Ben graduated from Ishpeming High School in 1937, and entered the Army Air Corps in 1941, serving in World War II as an aerial photographer stationed at Hickam Field, Hawaii at the rank of staff sergeant. Following his service to his country, he attended Northern Michigan University on the G.I. Bill and earned a B.A. in Accounting. He began his career at the Mather Inn and Cleveland Cliffs Iron Company in Ishpeming, and later moved to Houghton to work at Michigan Technological University. Ben retired from MTU in 1984 and enjoyed a long and happy retirement.
Ben was a lifetime member of Alfred Erickson Post 186, American Legion and was a lifetime member of the Ishpeming VFW. He served in several American Legion offices including Post Commander, Adjutant and 5th Zone Commander. In April 2012, Ben flew to Washington, D.C. with the Upper Peninsula Honor Flight, which brings veterans to Washington, D.C. to be honored at the WWII Memorial.
Ben loved music of all kinds, especially big bands, and enjoyed singing in the Ishpeming Choral Club, the Copper Country Chorale, Grace United Methodist Church Choir and in barbershop quartets. He was a loyal and lifelong Green Bay Packers fan and an avid Tigers fan.
Visitation will be held 4:00 to 8:00 p.m. Monday, September 9, 2013 at the Plowe Funeral home of Houghton. Funeral will be held 11:00 a.m. Tuesday, at the Plowe Funeral Home, 401 Memorial Road, Houghton, with Rev. Charles Williams to officiate. Interment will be in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to Ben’s late nephew Paul Valenti’s Memorial Scholarship Fund at Ishpeming High School or to the American Legion Alfred Erickson Post 186 in Hancock.
