Stewart ‘Stew’ W. Abbott
ISHPEMING, MI. – Stewart “Stew” W. Abbott, age 67 of 345 S. Rose St. Ishpeming Twp. passed away on Friday, September 6, 2013 at the Mather Nursing Center where he had resided since Aug. 25th.
Stewart was born October 17, 1945 in Marquette the son of the late John S.W. and Lillian (Parsons) Abbott.
Stew grew up in Negaunee. He married Cheryl Lyyski on July 20, 1968 at the Republic United Methodist Church. Stewart worked for the Cleveland Cliffs Iron Co., starting at the Mather “B” Mine, and then moving on to the Empire, Republic and retired from the Tilden Mine as a Dozer Operator. While Stew lived in Republic he had served on the Republic Volunteer Fire Dept. and with the E.M.S. Stewart moved to Ishpeming Twp. in the early 1990’s and had resided their since.
In Stew’s younger years he enjoyed playing around with his C.B. Radio and was known locally by the handle “Radar”. Stewart was an outdoorsman, taking part in annual Deer and Turkey hunts, along with fishing, spending time at camp, cutting wood and making Christmas Boughs from evergreen trees. He also had a passion for older cars, and once rebuilt a Willey’s Jeep.
Survivors include his wife Cheryl Abbott of Ishpeming, 5 children John Abbott of Marquette, Julia (Scott) Mattila of Green Bay, WI, Richard Abbott of Ishpeming, Matthew Abbott of Ishpeming and Phillip Abbott and his fiance Laylah Hamzah, a sister Nan McCurdy of Washington State, an aunt Bernice Parsons of Marquette, 3 grandchildren James and Jeanna Mattila and Liam Abbott, Shawn and Vickie Radcliffe of Republic, Walter and Donna Lyyski of Waupan, Wis., Robert and Roxanne Lyyski of Brandon, Wis., and nieces and nephews, along with several nieces, nephews and cousins.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 2pm until 4pm on Monday September 9, 2013 at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home.
A Time of Remembrance will follow at 4:00pm on Monday at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home. Inurnment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery.
Following the Time of Remembrance all are invited to gather at the Abbott Family Camp located 3 1/2 miles east of Republic, (A map will be provided at the funeral home).
