NMU volleyball: Wildcats open season with wins over Florida Institute of Technology, Southern Indiana

PENSACOLA, Fla. – The Northern Michigan University volleyball team opened the 2013 season with a pair of wins at the West Florida Invite on Friday, beating Florida Institute of Technology in four sets and Southern Indiana in three sets.

NMU opened the day with a 25-22, 25-15, 21-25, 25-15 win over FIT.

Senior Lina Lopes led NMU with 14 kills, while seniors Kalli Herron and Sarah Hamilton had 11. Lopes also led with 20 digs while senior Kellisha Harley set up the offense with 40 assists.

In NMU’s 25-22, 30-28, 25-13 win over Southern Indiana, Lopes once again led all players with 19 kills, 18 digs and added two aces. Sophomore Alex Berger tallied 14 digs and Harley added 11. Harley also had 37 assists.

Defensively, freshman Bridget Bussell led the way with four block assists, contributing to the team’s 12.

Today, the Wildcats face Missouri S&T at 3 p.m. and West Florida at 8 p.m. to close out the tournament.
