Ovid York

GWINN, MI. – Ovid York, 87, of Gwinn, died early Tuesday morning at the Mather Nursing Center in Ishpeming.

He was born June 4, 1926 to Carl and Bea (Storey) York in Ferndale, Michigan. The family relocated to South Haven, MI, where Ovid graduated from high school. He and a friend then hitch-hiked west, working as a well driller on ranches in Colorado and in a boat yard in Seattle, Washington. It was a highlight of his life as they had many exciting adventures.

Ovid married Peggy Starback in 1953 in Breedsville, MI and moved to Jenison, MI, where his children, Suzanne and Carlton were born. The family fell in love with the Upper Peninsula and moved to Gwinn in 1972 where he worked for the DNR as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement.

He had many interests including camping at the family camp in Baraga County and traveling with their small motor home across the US, Canada and Alaska. He also enjoyed square dancing, wreath making, cutting firewood, crafting rustic furniture, making pickles, reading and family life.

Ovid was a charter member of the Forsyth Singers and retired from the group in 2012.

He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Peggy York of Gwinn; daughter, Suzanne (Ron) Hewson of Gwinn; son, Carl (Sheila) York of Weaverville, NC; granddaughters, Heather (Greg) Steltenpohl of Marquette and Amber (Levi Tadgerson) Shoulders of Marquette; and great-granddaughters, Hayden Steltenpohl & Lexi Tadgerson.

He was preceded in death by his parents, an infant son, and three sisters.

A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 7, 2013 at 12 Noon at the Gwinn United Methodist Church with Rev. Gerri Hamlen officiating. Visitation will be held for one hour prior to the service in the church.
