NMU soccer; Wildcats picked seventh overall in GLIAC poll

MARQUETTE – The Northern Michigan University women’s soccer team was pegged to finish seventh overall in the GLIAC in 2013, according to the league’s preseason coaches poll that was released Wednesday.

The league’s 13 head coaches participated in the balloting, but were not allowed to vote for their team.

The 2012 co-GLIAC champions from Grand Valley State and Michigan Tech topped the poll with GVSU beating out Tech for the No. 1 spot. The Lakers received 12 first-place votes while the Huskies had one.

Saginaw Valley State, Ohio Dominican, Findlay and Ferris State were all picked ahead of NMU.

The Wildcats are coming off a 4-13 overall record in 2012 and 3-10 mark in the GLIAC.

NMU began its preseason with a two-week tour of Europe in early August that included exhibition games and training.

Northern plays a final exhibition game against the Allouez Stride at noon Sunday at the NMU Soccer Field before kicking off the regular season Sept. 5 at Minnesota-Duluth.
