Prep tennis: Ishpeming falls at West Iron County
IRON RIVER – Despite wins by singles players Jaime Olson and Jessica Penhale, the Ishpeming High School girls tennis team opened its season on a sour note Wednesday.
Dropping all four doubles matches, the Hematites of head coach Erl Langness lost a 6-2 decision to host West Iron County.
It was the first of seven matches in nine days for IHS.
“We have 13 total matches and half of our season will be done in two weeks,” Langness said. “It’s a problem for kids on vacation.”
Olson took a 6-4, 6-4 decision over Tori Harris-Hoogenboom at No. 2 singles.
“Jaime was down 4-3 in the second set, but came back to win in a match that went 1 3/4 hours,” Langness said.
Penhale, meanwhile, claimed a 6-4, 1-6, 6-2 victory over Jessie Prudhomme at No. 3 singles.
“Jessica turned herself around after the second set and made a nice comeback,” the IHS coach said.
“We did pretty well overall. Our singles lineup (Wednesday) was pretty much normal. But in doubles, we were missing some players due to injury or vacation.”
