Buck’s Party Store, Crossfit 906 wrap up Iron Range Women’s Softball League regular season crowns

NEGAUNEE – Buck’s Party Store completed a perfect campaign while Crossfit 906 came from behind to clinch its division on Aug. 14, the final night of the regular season in the Iron Range Women’s Softball League.

The league was set to hold playoffs the weekend of Aug. 16-18, while the annual all-star night is on Wednesday, Aug. 21.

In Class A, Buck’s wrapped up a 12-0 season with a 9-3 victory over previoius second-place Iracore. Libby Nelson was 3 for 3, Mariah Beaman 2 for 2 and Amber Buckmaster tripled for the champs, while Courtney Waara was 3 for 3 with a double and Stacie Kruse 2 for 3 for Iracore.

PC Medic broke a second-place tie with Iracore by scoring a 21-3 victory over Cliffs Natural Resources. Terri Tammelin led the winners with a 5-of-5 night that included a triple and two doubles, while Randi Boule tripled for Cliffs.

Amber Emanuelson hit for the cycle to insure Jasper Ridge 1 would slip into fourth place with a 20-7 win over Hickey’s. Teammate Erika Roberts was 4 for 4. Hickey’s Mary Kaye Grady, who doubled, and Jasper’s Megan Chapman each went 3 for 3, while Julie Steede was 2 for 3 for Hickey’s.

Sue Rice homered as Jubilee Foods edged Fox Negaunee, 9-7. Fox’s Katie Rankinen had two hits.

Nikki Whitford went 4 for 4 with a triple and six RBIs to lead The Venice to a 23-0 shutout of Sisters Hair Co. Teammate Mick Roberts was also 4 for 4 while Steph Robar homered. Quinn Whitford had a single for Sisters.

In Class B, Crossfit 906 pulled even with Rookies Too/Quality Car Care with 9-3 records, but Crossfit won first place on a tiebreaker. Four more teams finished just a game out of first place.

Crossfit downed Jack’s Teepee, 12-8, as the winners’ Katie Richer, who tripled, Ashley Martin and Lizzy VanBuren all went 3 for 4. Teammate Tammy Benda was 2 for 3 with a triple. Jack’s Christy Gaboury was 3 for 3 while Gabby Croley was 2 for 3 with a triple.

Jack’s got a win in a make-up game, 19-13 over Hair Hiatus, as Croley and teammates Tina Maki and Chelsey Belden all were 3 for 3. One of Croley’s hits was an over-the-fence home run. HH’s Joanna Smail, who tripled, Bethany Firby and Wendi Annala were each 3 for 3.

Tino’s 2 outscored Rookies/Quality, 20-14, with the victors’ Emily Haage, Rachel Argall and Chelsea Hewitt each going 4 for 5. Haage had a triple and double, Argall a home run and Hewitt a triple. For Rookies, Brandi Petrocik was 5 for 5, Becky Moyle 4 for 5 with a grand slam and Lori Marshall 2 for 4 with a homer.

Rookies/Quality did get a win in a makeup game, 19-10 over Hair Hiatus, as Julie Carlson was 4 for 4 with a homer, Michelle Lammi 2 for 4 with a homer and Lori Rivord 3 for 4. HH’s Shana Caliguri was 4 for 4 while Smail was 2 for 4 with a triple.

Nikki Hebert was 3 for 4 to help U.P. Off Road & Performance eke out a 7-6 win over Hair Hiatus, which had Thalicia Gray go 3 for 3 and Michelle Gray and Smail both be 2 for 3. Gray doubled and Smail tripled.

Signs Unlimited defeated Jasper Ridge Brewery 2, 21-15, as both teams came in at 8-4, along with Tino’s 2 and U.P. Off Road & Performance.

Signs’ Becky Gauthier was 4 for 5, Becca LaChappelle tripled and teammates Emily Garceau and Sarah Peura each were 3 for 4. Jasper’s Liz Valela hit a homer, Loretta Dugan a triple and Briana Bancroft a double.

Pasquali’s dropped VFW, 20-3, as the winners’ Cheryl Oliver and Tricia Miilu each were 4 for 4 and VFW’s Amy Young collected a hit.

Dave’s Collision held off Paradise Bar, 18-11, as Jen Wallner and Mel Bess both were 5 for 5 for the winners. Wallner had two doubles and a triple while Bess homered. For Paradise, Sara Martin, who homered, and Heather Nelson each went 3 for 3.

Country Lanes insured first place in Class C with a 25-2 stomping of TruNorth Credit Union as the winners’ Becky Lawson homered twice, Kaylee O’Connor doubled two times and Deanne O’Connor homered.

The Negaunee Eagles retained second place despite falling to U.P. Fabricating, 6-4, as the winners’ Alyse Schaefer was 3 for 3 and teammate Lynn Laakso homered. The Eagles’ Chastity Ellet homered and Joy Prisk tripled.

Martin Sports Apparel moved into a third-place tie with a 10-7 victory over The Wooden Nickel. Martin’s Brooke Kutchie was 3 for 4 while Carley Maanika tripled, and the Nickel’s Kelsey McCarthy was 3 for 3 and pitcher Lisa Plis fanned three straight batters.

Eastwood got past Rookies 1, 11-8, as the victors’ Taryn Gleason had a triple and double and Brandi Johnson had a hit and two RBIs. For Rookies, Sammy Laukka doubled and collected an RBI.

Palomaki Family Chiropractic outscored Willey’s Tire Shop, 16-10, as Jen Flynn was 3 for 3 and Mary Aho 3 for 4 for Palomaki, and Jamie Bryan was 4 for 4 and Jeanne Kangas 3 for 4 for Willey’s.
