Sex charges made against Ishpeming resident

ISHPEMING – An Ishpeming man was arraigned at the 96th District Court Tuesday on one count of accosting a child for immoral purposes and one count of criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree.

Ishpeming City Police arrested 44-year-old John Wayne Mathews of North Street Friday after an investigation resulted in the Marquette County Prosecutor’s Office authorizing the two charges against him. Mathews is currently lodged at the Marquette County Jail.

The first count – accosting, enticing or soliciting a child for immoral purpose – is punishable by up to four years in prison and/or a $4,000 fine.

Count two, criminal sexual conduct in the fourth degree, is a misdemeanor punishable by up to two years in prison and/or $500.

Mathews’ bond was set at $100,000 on each count. A preliminary examination is scheduled at the 96th District Court in Ishpeming Tuesday.
