Negaunee man named UP?Veteran of the Year
MARQUETTE -?Philip Donald Taskila has been selected as the 2013 Upper Peninsula Veteran of the year.
His post, VFW Post 3165 of Negaunee, nominated him to receive this award.
The selection committee consisted of past U.P. State Commanders from various veteran organizations.
Taskila is a highly decorated Vietnam War Army veteran receiving such decorations as the Bronze Star Medal, National Defense Medal, Vietnam Campaign Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal among other military decorations.
Taskila has life membership in the Disabled Veterans America, AMVETS, VVA, VFW and the VFW Past Commanders Club. He is also a member of the Military Order of the Cootie, an honor society of the VFW. He has served his fellow veterans as a representative of the VFW National Home, VFW National Aide de Camp twice, Quartermaster at the Post and District level, Marquette County Trust Fund Agent and Marquette County Senior Vice-Commander, plus serving on most Post chairs and committees at the Post level.
Taskila is an avid chess player winning the U.P. Chess Championship in 1985 and co-champion in 1980 and 1987. He continues his interest in chess as a player, serving as tournament director of the 2012 U.P. Chess Championships.
The U.P. Veteran of the Year honor will be awarded to him during a ceremony at the U.P. State Fair in Escanaba at 11 a.m. Friday.
Gov. Rick Snyder is expected to present at the ceremony. The public is invited to attend.
