Malton Road will soon open to traffic

ISHPEMING – After almost a year of construction, Malton Road will open to traffic in the next couple weeks.

The road was recently paved and the Ishpeming Department of Public Works has ordered and is awaiting the arrival of the road signs, which must be installed before the road can be officially opened.

When the final asphalt was poured, the contractor – the Upper Peninsula Engineers and Architects- opened the road last week, said Ishpeming Department of Public Works supervisor and Interim City Manager Jon Kangas.

When it was learned that the road had been opened without the proper signage installed, it was closed again, with a temporary stop sign installed for safety at County Road.

The Ishpeming Downtown Development Authority decided in April to pave the road two inches thick and 24 feet wide with 8 foot gravel shoulders.

Financing for the road work came from a Michigan Economic Development Corp. grant.
