George A. ‘Sonnie’ Kantola
ISHPEMING, Mich. – George A. “Sonnie” Kantola, age 73, of 1765 Rosewood Lane, Ishpeming Township, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2013, at his home while under the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
George was born October 16, 1939, in Palmer the son of the late George A. and Hilia A. (Peura) Kantola. He was raised in Palmer, and resided in Ishpeming Township for the major portion of his life. George loved his job as a woods worker in his younger years, having worked for Holli Logging and some other logging companies. He moved on, getting a job at the Tracy Mine for the Jones and Laughlin Co., and then he worked for Cleveland Cliffs, first at the Cliffs Dow property, then at the Mather B and retired from the Empire Mine as a heavy equipment operator after over 29 years with Cliffs.
George was a member of the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church. Sonnie was an outdoorsman, enjoying hunting, fishing, Four Wheeling, Kayaking and Biking. He loved drawing, photography, singing and doing landscaping. His dogs held a special place in his heart.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara Kantola, of Ishpeming, 3 children including 2 sons John (Julie Bessolo) Kantola of Diorite Loc., and Kevin (Tanya Warren) Kantola of Ishpeming, and a daughter Julie (Tony) Gorman of Madera, CA, a sister Mary (Russell) Salo of National Mine, 7 grandchildren Mitchell, Brenton and Raquelle Kantola, Collin, Jake and Kayla Gorman and Michael Nault along with numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by a son James “Jaimie” Kantola, 4 brothers Arne, Elmer, John and Leo Kantola and 2 sisters Aili Lawrence and Esther Sikkila.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 5 until 8 p.m. on Tuesday, August 13, 2013, at the Bjork & Zhulkie Funeral Home in Ishpeming, and from 12:00 noon until 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 14, 2013, at the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church in Negaunee. Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday at the Eastwood Apostolic Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dale Niskanen and Andy Kandoll to officiate. Interment will take place at the Negaunee Cemetery. A luncheon will follow in the church hall.
Pallbearers will be Steve and Tim Maki, Jim Goloversic, Russell Salo, Mitchell, Brenton, Kevin and John Kantola.
