Outdoor writer to sign books
MUNISING – Outdoor writer, photographer and book author Richard P. Smith of Marquette will be signing books beginning at 10 a.m. Aug. 24 at the Central U.P. Tourist Information Center next to Hardee’s in Munising. Smith will be at the information center most of the day.
A pair of his DVDs on whitetail deer and black bear will be available for purchase, as well as many of his books.
Annual block party in Harvey
HARVEY – The 6th Annual Silver Creek Neighborhood Block Party will be held from noon to 5 p.m. Saturday at Silver Creek Church, 219 Silver Creek Road in Harvey.
The entire community is invited to this free event. Activities include a backpack and school supply give away, a children’s clothing closet, carnival style games and inflatables, children’s presentation, food, prizes and an outdoor concert by 41 West. Everything is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring diapers, wipes, or other baby items that will then be donated to the Care Clinic’s Family Resource Closet.
Nonprofit agencies will be on hand at the event to provide information about the services and programs they offer within the community. Moosic, arts festival at Van Riper
CHAMPION – Van Riper State Park, along U.S. 41 west of Champion, will host the Fourth Annual Moosic & Arts Festival on Saturday. The event will include a day of music, food and artisan vendors even a bounce-house for the little ones. The lineup of local musicians includes Dan Lawrence, the Goldmine Girls, Green Gene, Zac Lancaster, Black Pearl, AJ Stone, Stuart Harsila, Troy Graham and Helena Antoni.
The festival will begin at 11 a.m., with musical acts starting on the main stage from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. Festival admission is free, but all vehicles entering the park are required to have a Recreation Passport. Attendees may bring a blanket or lawn chairs and stay for the day, or camp for the weekend.

Party with Purpose in Harvey
HARVEY – A Party With A Purpose Fundraiser to benefit the Friends of Presque Isle, who wish to build an inclusive playground for all children, will take place from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday at the Bayou Bar & Grill, 200 W. Main St. in Harvey. The following vendors will donate a portion of their sales: Tastefully Simple, Miche, Partylite, Pampered Chef, Dove Chocolate Discoveries, Park Lane Jewelry and Arbonne.
Derby to hold final match
MARQUETTE – Dead River Derby will hold their final match of the season Marquette’s Dead River Derby and Green Bay’s Paper Valley Roller Girls. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the game begins at 7 p.m. Saturday. Advance tickets are $8 for adults, $5 for ages 10-17 and free for ages 9 and younger, and will be available from Gwinn’s Mobil Express Station, Stucko’s Bar and Grill, The Marquette Food Co-op and any DRD league member. Tickets at the door will cost $10, $5, respectively.
Tickets also may be purchased from www.brownpapertickets.com. A limited number of $25 VIP tickets will be available for purchase. VIP seating includes trackside seating, beverage service, and league members present to answer questions about game play. A portion of the event’s proceeds will be donated to assist the Seeds and Spores’ Barn Raiser Benefit Fund.
Activities for the evening include a bounce house for the kids, a 50/50 raffle, half time entertainment and more.

Aviation conference at Mackinac
MACKINAC ISLAND – The Upper Michigan Green Aviation Coalition will hold its annual conference Aug. 28-29 at Mission Point Resort on Mackinac Island.
The event will bring industry leaders together with hopes of accelerating job growth, commercializing technology and increasing economic development throughout the state.

Brunch by the Bay in Munising
MUNISING – Alger County Historical Society will host Brunch by the Bay, a fundraiser catered by Johnny Dogs, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 18 at the Heritage Center on Washington Street in Munising. The center can be reached by following the signs for Munising Memorial Hospital.
Specially featured this summer at the museum is a large display of Munising woodenware and locally made Quilts for Soldiers. Loren Graham will be signing his latest Grand Island book, with copies available for purchase.

Youth acting camp offered
MARQUETTE – A Preschool and Elementary School Acting Camp will run from 9 a.m. to noon Aug. 19-23 at Lake Superior Theatre in Marquette. This program for ages 3-8 costs $75 per person.
Youths will be introduced to all aspects of acting, music and dance while working on a final production. Acting games and imagination exercises will be used to teach.

ISHPEMING – A free presentation titled “Affordable Health Care Act – What you want to know but where afraid to ask” will be held at 1 p.m. Aug. 22 at the Ishpeming Senior Center, 320 S. Pine St.
