James “Jim” Francis Meyer
ISHPEMING, MI. – James “Jim” Francis Meyer, age 74, of 92 Sunnyside Estates, passed away on Friday August 9, 2013 while in the loving care of his family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Jim was born to Earl H. & Alice J (Lammi) Meyer on April 28, 1939 in Marquette. His mother passed away 5 weeks after Jim’s birth. He and his older brother were raised in the loving and caring home of their maternal grandparents, Frank and Fanny Lammi, along with raising their own children with the same love and compassion as their own.
Jim worked at a variety of jobs in the local area, Ontonagon & Milwaukee as a young man. He married the love of his life, Dorothy Uuro on Dec. 23, 1960. After the births of their two children, they settled in Ontonagon, working for the Dept. of Corrections in the State Prison Camp Program as a Corrections Officer. He later transferred to the Marquette Branch Prison so they could move their family back to Ishpeming. Jim left his State employment to work for Cliffs in the early 1970’s, starting at the Empire, transferring to the Tilden Mine, where he eventually took an early retirement due to poor health after 26 years with the company.
Jim was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. He was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1957. Jim loved the outdoors, especially deer and bear hunting along with fishing the “Big Lakes” with his best fishing pal, his wife.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dorothy Meyer of Ishpeming, a son David (Cindy) Meyer of Oakdale, CA, a daughter Lori (Steve Bourdage) Butler of Ishpeming, granddaughter Amanda Butler of Ishpeming, 2 great grandsons Tyler and Tanner Leach and their mother Kristen Leach. Also surviving are 2 sisters Joan Becker of Coon Rapids, MN and Linda Stanaway of Rhinelander, WI, a special sister-in-law Carol (Bill) Pohlman of Traverse City, along with numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Frank and Fanny Lammi, his parents, 2 brothers Terrence and Robert Bruce Meyer, a sister Dawn Pearson, son-in-law Richard Butler, special aunts and uncles Dorothy and Hank Rundman, and Ruth and Robert Bartanen and grandson David Meyer Jr.
The family will greet relatives and friends from 12noon until 1:00pm on Tuesday August 13, 2013 at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Ishpeming. A memorial service will be celebrated at 1:00pm on Tuesday at the Bethel Lutheran Church with the Rev. Lauri O. Maki to officiate. Inurnment will take place at the Ishpeming Cemetery. A luncheon will follow the services in the church hall.
In lieu of flowers, memorial may be directed to the Social Ministry Fund at the Bethel Lutheran Church in Jim’s memory.
Jim’s family wishes to thank Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice for their wonderful care of Jim these past few weeks. Also, thank you to Pastor Lauri Maki for his visits, and his care and concern.
