Negaunee Oldtimers clobber Marquette

MARQUETTE – Scoring four runs in three different innings, the Negaunee Oldtimers rolled to a 17-3 softball triumph over Marquette Friday at the Lions Field in Marquette Township.

Led by Gerry Pirkola and Steve Parkkonen, Negaunee racked up 17 hits, with seven batters recording at least two hits each.

Pirkola went 3-for-3 with two doubles and knocked in two runs; Parkkonen also went 3-for-3.

Teammate Edsel Syrjala hit two doubles, scored three times and added two RBIs.

Dave Rice, Reuven Romback, Don Trudell and winning pitcher Roland “Foo” Koski chipped in two hits each.

Dave Savolainen added a bases-clearing three-run double in the opening inning for Negaunee.

Koski allowed two unearned runs in the first on a hit batter and two errors, but gave up only two hits in five innings of work.

Parkkonen pitched the last two innings, allowing one run and two hits.

Bill Kauppila started and took the mound loss for Marquette. Eugene Menapace pitched in relief in the later innings.
