Double fatal accident in Alger County Thursday
MUNISING – An elderly Alger County couple was killed Thursday afternoon when the car they were in collided with a Michigan Department of Natural Resources dump truck along Alger County Highway 58, near the intersection with the Adams Trail.
Michigan State Police troopers from the Munising detachment said Robert Pine, 83, and Lucy Pine, 79, of Grand Marais died from injuries involved in the Burt Township crash.
An autopsy was scheduled for today at Marquette General Hospital for Robert Pine, who was the driver of the couple’s 1994 Buick four-door.
Troopers said they were dispatched to the crash scene at 2:30 p.m., which was located east of Munising and west of Grand Marais. Alger County H-58 is a scenic blacktopped route connecting the two communities and the main access to and through Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore.
Police said Scott Lakosky, 35, of Manistique was driving the DNR dump truck south on H-58 when the northbound Pine vehicle crossed the centerline and struck the dump truck in a sideswipe-type accident. Troopers said the 1993 International dump truck Lakosky was driving went into a ditch and rolled over. Police did not have information to report today on what exactly happened to the Pine vehicle after it hit the dump truck.
Lakosky used a radio to call emergency dispatchers, reporting the crash. Lakosky was not hurt in the incident, according to state police.
Two state police accident reconstructionists, including one from northern lower Michigan, surveyed the scene of the accident Thursday. Investigation into the crash continued today.
Police said the autopsy will determine the cause of Robert Pine’s death and will help police determine whether any medical issues may have caused Pine to cross the centerline, causing the accident.
Troopers were assisted by National Park Service rangers from Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore and Alger County’s ambulance and extrication unit.
