County fair offers 4 days of family fun

MARQUETTE – With musicians and horse shows, go-kart races and mud drags, numerous exhibits and more, the annual Marquette County Fair returns to the fairgrounds in Sands Township for four days beginning Thursday.

Today, in preparation for Thursday’s opening to the public, livestock will be moved into place and tested, with livestock weigh-ins beginning at noon. Exhibitors will enter various departments beginning at 4 p.m.

At 9 a.m. Thursday, poultry, rabbits, market and dairy animals will be judged.

The fair exhibits open to the public at noon Thursday.

Gate admission prices are $5 for 12 years old and older, $1 for children 5-11 years old, children 4 years and younger are admitted free, and senior citizens (age 60 and over) and veterans are admitted for $1 on Thursday only.

Weekly admission wristbands, which are separate from and not valid for midway rides, may be purchased for $15 for adults and $3 for children, for all four days.

Entertainment ongoing throughout the fair will include T.J. Schmidt and Co., Cirque Amongus, Wild World of Animals, pony rides, 4-H activities tent and American Legion Post No. 44 bingo.

Some highlights of the activities scheduled for the fair include:


– 2:30-4:30 p.m., Blue Champagne, playing at the gazebo

– 3-7 p.m., Lutey’s Heritage Motors antique car show

– 4 p.m., miniature horse show

– 5 p.m., poultry and rabbit showmanship

– 5:30 p.m., Fun Run

– 6-8 p.m., Derrell Syria Project, playing at the gazebo

– 6:30 p.m., firemen’s tournament; pee wee show

– 7 p.m., Iron Horse Motor Cross event at motor sports arena


– 9 a.m., youth and open horse show

– 10 a.m., fair opens to the public

– 1-4:30 p.m., Brian Matthews, playing at the gazebo

– 4 p.m., horse show, speed events

– 6-10 p.m., Circle of Willis, playing at the gazebo

– 6:30 p.m., go-kart races


– 10 a.m., fair opens to the public; draft horse show

– 11:30 a.m., presentation of livestock awards

– Noon, U.P. mud drags; junior livestock sale, followed by small animal sale

– 2-5 p.m., Jackpine, playing at the gazebo

– 5 p.m., go-kart races; team penning

– 6-10 p.m., Nudge, playing at the gazebo


– 10 a.m., fair opens to the public

– Noon, dog show

– 1 p.m., antique fun tractor pull

– 1-4 p.m., Flat Broke Blues Band, playing at the gazebo

– 1 p.m., go-kart races

– 5:15 p.m., release of exhibits
