ISHPEMING, Mich. – Kaarina Lucas, age 90, of 260 Prospect Ave., West Ishpeming Location, passed away on Saturday, August 3, 2013, at her home while under the loving care of her family and the Upper Peninsula Home Health and Hospice.
Kaarina was born November 27, 1922 on the Korpi family farm north of Ishpeming, the daughter of Matthew and Hilda (Wiipola) Korpi. She was a graduate of the Ishpeming High School, Class of 1940. Kaarina went on to serve in the Untied States Navy during World War II, as part of the Hospital Medical Corps, a group that became known as the “Waves.” Upon her return from the service Kaarina went on to receive her degree as a LPN from Northern Michigan University. Kaarina worked for many years as a nurse at the Bell Memorial Hospital in Ishpeming. She was a member of the Bethel Lutheran Church. She enjoyed her flower gardens and quilting, along with reading and doing crossword puzzles.
Kaarina was preceded in death by her husband, William.
Survivors include 4 children: Patricia Rosen of Huntsville, Ala., Paul Lucas of Marquette, Carolyn Lucas of Ishpeming and Erik (Kim) Lucas of Seattle, Wash.; 2 sisters: Amanda Santti of Marquette and Ellen Tippett of Ishpeming; along with several nieces and nephews.
Private family services will be held at a later date.
