Accused dog shooter arraigned

MARQUETTE – A Gwinn man accused of shooting a dog remains free on bond after his arraignment Monday in Marquette County District Court.

Michael Baumann, 65, was charged with reckless use of a firearm and killing or torturing an animal. The firearms count is a misdemeanor and the animal-related charge is a felony.

The Forsyth Township Police Department said an officer was dispatched to the 100 block of Johnson Lake Road on July 20 to a call reporting a dog being shot several times. Police said further investigation resulted in a warrant being issued for Baumann.

Forsyth police said the dog that was allegedly shot by Baumann was owned by his neighbor. Police said a .22 caliber weapon was used and the dog survived the shooting.

He was arrested on July 23. He is scheduled for a preliminary examination and pretrial hearing at 2:15 p.m. Aug. 9 in district court.
