Garage fire investigated

MARQUETTE – A fire in a garage located along Sheridan Street in Marquette was swiftly put out by Marquette City Fire Department firefighters Friday afternoon.

According to the fire department, firefighters were called at 2:02 p.m. to 614 Sheridan St. on a report from central dispatch of a garage fire.

Upon arrival, firefighters saw smoke coming from the garage’s eaves. Firefighters entered the garage to search for possible victims inside, but found none.

The fire, which was located at the back of the garage near a work bench, was controlled and extinguished within 10 minutes.

Damage to the garage was confined to the area of origin.

Firefighters were able to clear the scene at 2:56 p.m.

The cause of the fire is under investigation by city fire investigators. A lightning strike in the area was reported to Marquette City Police at roughly the same time as the fire.

Assisting on the scene were Marquette General Hospital EMS, Northern Michigan University Public Safety and Marquette City Police Department.
