Wave 96 conquer Appleton Summer Shootout

APPLETON, Wis. – Winning all four games, the Wave 96 Select girls soccer team claimed the Appleton (Wis.) Summer Shootout in play June 29-30.

In its opening game, the Wave defeated Dakota Rev Tempest (Minn.), 3-0. Scoring for the winners were Makaela Burse (2) and Alex Cording, with assists recorded by Courtney Qualley, Carleigh Hillier and Burse.

Keeper Molly Gaudreau made three saves for the Wave.

In game 2, the Wave blanked Everton FC – reportedly the No. 5-ranked team in Wis. – by a 2-0 count. Casey Durand and Burse notched goals, with assists by Sierra Lancour and Durand.

Keeper Courtney Qualley made four stops in the contest as the Wave won their bracket in pool play.

In the semifinal, the Wave overcame a 1-0 first half deficit to score five unanswered goals in a 5-1 victory over the Howard (Wis.) Hurricanes.

Wave 96 goals were scored by Shelby Ross, Lizzy Slagle, Courtney Qualley and Burse (2), with assists collected by Shayla Huebner, Santina Bianco, Burse and Qualley.

Keepers Qualley and Gaudreau combined for three saves.

In the Championship game, the Wave defeated Keliix (Minn.), 2-1 in a shootout.

Alex Cording scored four minutes into the game for the Wave, assisted by Burse.

The Wave then held Keliix scoreless until 40 seconds remained in the game, when it scored on a direct kick, forcing a shootout.

The Wave then won the shootout, 3-2, behind keeper Gaudreau and scores by Higgins, C. Hillier and Cording.
