All 3 U.P. teams 1-1 in Little League baseball state majors tournament

ISHPEMING – All three Upper Peninsula teams now have 1-1 records after two days of play at the Little League Major Division state baseball tournament being held in Ishpeming.

Eight of the event’s original 16 teams advance to quarterfinal play Monday after playing their third and final pool game today.

The teams are split into four pools of four teams each, with two teams from each pool advancing. Half the teams are now 1-1.

The three U.P. teams are in separate pools, meaning any number of them could advance depending on what happens today.

Iron Mountain had the most exciting game, going into the eighth inning before pulling out a 9-7 victory over Taylor Northwest. Trailing 5-2, IM tied the game with three runs in the top of the fifth inning only to have Taylor retake a 7-5 lead in the bottom of the inning.

In the top of the sixth and final inning, Tyler Beauchamp reached on a hit with two outs and C.J. Bolo brought him home with a two-run homer to retie it, 7-7.

IM then used a hit batsman and single by Gavin Londo to put runners on and two wild pitches to score them and earn the victory.

Beauchamp and winning pitcher Foster Wonders, who was the last of several IM pitchers, each had two hits.

Houghton County’s Portage Lake held on for a 3-2 victory over Midland Northeast, scoring three times in the first two innings that included three walks and hits by Alex Nordstrom and Kevin Bostwick.

Bostwick, who knocked in the third run, also went all six innings on the mound for the win. He carried a shutout into the sixth as Midland made a bid for extra innings but stranded the tying runner on second base.

Sault Ste. Marie fell to West Portage, 11-3, as the Soo got three runs in the fifth after falling behind 11-0. Jacob Harper got most of the work on the mound for the Soo, which got a double from Logan Bailey and singles from Hunter Coneset and Chad Sabatos.
