NMU football: Ostrowsky promotes Ballard to defensive coordinator
MARQUETTE – Northern Michigan University head football coach Chris Ostrowsky promoted defensive assistant coach Joe Ballard to defensive coordinator on Tuesday while also announcing the hiring of two new assistants.
Ballard replaces former defensive coordinator Brian Newberry after six seasons as an assistant coach on defense for the Wildcats. Newberry left Northern in June for the defensive coordinator job at Kennesaw State, which will begin playing NCAA Division I football in 2015.
“I wanted to create great continuity amongst the staff and I think we’ve done that,” Ostrowsky said. “Joe Ballard will make a seamless transition to defensive coordinator for our players. He brings tremendous amounts of loyalty, toughness and knowledge to the position.”
NMU hired Karl Maslowski out of Western Kentucky University to coach the linebackers and special teams while Dane Rowe was hired as an assistant coach on offense.
Maslowski has spent the past three seasons at WKU coaching linebackers after playing linebacker at WKU from 2000-03. He also coached previously at Miami University in Ohio and Holy Cross in Massachusetts.
Rowe was a defensive graduate assistant at the University of Wyoming during the 2012 season. He also coached at Merrimack (Mass.) in the spring of 2012 and spent two seasons at Yale.
NMU’s preseason begins on Aug. 17.
