Patron’s star shines bright again
MARQUETTE – For the second straight day on Monday, Karlie Patron made sure Negaunee would keep playing in the Little League District 11 Minors softball tournament.
Patron pitched all four innings in near-perfect fashion as her team defeated Portage Lake, 10-0, to advance in the elimination bracket of this double-elimination tourney.
Negaunee now faces Baraga at 6:30 p.m. today in the first championship game. Negaunee, which lost to Baraga 13-12 in the opening round, will have to defeat Baraga tonight and at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday to earn the title. All games are being played at Lions Field in Marquette Township.
Patron made sure her team got to tonight’s contest by striking out 11 of the 12 batters she faced on Monday, a night after she fanned all six batters she saw in a 26-1 win over Marquette.
Patron also was a hitting star, collecting a double in the first inning and knocking in three runs. That gives her seven RBIs over the past two days.
Teammate Loulou Mattila went 2 for 2 with two runs scored, while Josie Thomson hit a double and Skylar Hall a single. Thomson, Shaylee Menhenick, Ally Ennett each had an RBI, while Hall and Katelyn Lammi both scored two runs.
Negaunee scored six times in the first inning to give Patron more than enough support.
