MARQUETTE – A pair of Marquette Soccer Academy teams captured titles at the recent 2013 Summer Shootout in Appleton, Wis.
The U-10 and U-12 girls teams each won their age brackets.
The U-10 squad swept its opponents, starting with a 5-2 win over MC United Cambray behind goals from Ella Lunseth, Allison Jette and Emilia Palomaki.
The trio scored all seven goals in a 7-3 triumph in Game 2 over the Appletom SC Academy and teammate Bella Anderson notched the winning goal in a 5-4 shootout in Marquette’s third contest against HYSA United.
“The girls performed remarkably (well) … despite missing some key players,” coach Jack Curtin said. “All the girls played their parts.”
The U-12 girls, meanwhile, went 3-1 to take their age bracket, defeating HYSA United, 5-1, and Everton FC, 3-0, before losing to the Blaine Shock, 3-0, in Game 3.
They then faced Blaine again in the final, taking a 2-0 victory behind goals by Lauren Kurzawa and Isabel Carr.
Clara Smith recorded the shutout in goal for the Academy.
“To turn around from a 3-0 loss to a 2-0 win shows what courage and talent they have as a group,” Curtin said.
At the same tournament, the UPFA United U-12 boys went 2-1 to take second place.
They lost a 2-0 shootout in the final to MC United 12 Ely after ending regulation tied 1-1. Brendan LeClaire scored the team’s regulation goal from 30 yards out.
On its way to the final, the local team defeated the SSA Red Bulls, 2-1, and the Keliix Intra Soccer Club, 6-0.
“It’s always heartbreaking to lose in a PK (penalty kick) shootout,” coach Chris Toolin said. “(But) the boys played some fantastic soccer at times over the course of the tournament … .”
The U-9 boys also took second place with a 2-1 record, defeating the Appleton SC Academy Pumas, 7-4, and the MC United Lightning, 5-4.
They then lost the title game, 5-3, to the Keliix Intra Soccer Club. Marquette goals came from Jake Garrow, John Weber and Matthew Rowe.
“Considering many players were playing a year up, the boys did Marquette proud with several gutsy performances,” Curtin said.
