Negaunee, Marquette girls bow in district softball play

MARQUETTE – Both Negaunee and Marquette took it on the chin Saturday in District 11 girls Minor (9-10) District 11 tournament softball play in Marquette.

Negaunee dropped a 13-12 decision to Baraga, while Marquette fell to Portage Lake, 12-8.

In the tourney opener, Negaunee held a 9-2 lead in the bottom of the fourth when Baraga scored five runs to cut the gap.

Negaunee notched three runs in the sixth, but the winners came back with six in the bottom of the frame, with Summer Dudo scoring the pivotal run on a wild pitch.

Morgan Carlson posted three hits for Negaunee. Teammates Larissa Anderson, Karlie Patron and Ally Ennett added two apiece.

Maija Rice led Baraga with two hits. Kailyn Voskuhl drove in three runs.

Portage lake opened a 9-0 lead in the first two innings against Marquette, but the home team chipped away to trail just 10-8 after five.

The winners scored twice in the sixth, however, to ice the game.

Josie Connors led Portage Lake with two hits and three runs scored.

Marquette recorded just two hits, both by Sophia Van den Ende.

Negaunee and Marquette will meet at 12:30 p.m. today, with Baraga and Portage Lake set to clash at 2:30 p.m.,
