Negaunee Minors suffer District 11 tourney elimination

MARQUETTE – Unable to solve pitcher Davin Hill, the Negaunee Minor (9-10) All-Star baseball team saw its season come to an end Friday with a 9-0 loss to Portage Lake in District 11 tournament action held in Marquette.

Hill tossed a complete game (six-inning) one-hitter and struck out 12 as Portage Lake advanced to sectional play July 19-21. He didn’t walk a batter.

Mason Mikesch, Colin Cowell and Eli Larson recorded two hits apiece for the winners. Larson knocked in three runs and Mikesch two.

Michael Dellangelo posted Negaunee’s lone hit.

Tanner Peterson took the mound loss. He allowed three runs on three hits and two walks in four innings of work. Peterson fanned five.

On Thursday, Negaunee stayed alive in the elimination bracket, erasing a 7-6 deficit by scoring seven unanswered runs.

Negaunee pitchers Alex Munson and Will Luke were also their team’s batting heroes, Munson going 3-for-4 with an RBI, two runs scored and a stolen base, and Luke 2-for-4 with a double and two runs scored.

Luke pitched the final three innings and got the win, allowing one run on three hits.

Munson pitched the first three frames, giving up six runs on four hits and two walks while striking out eight.

Teammates Jackson Gladwell, Peterson and Joe Mallett each had a hit and knocked in two runs.

PL 11, Ishpeming 1

On Thursday in the Majors (11-12) tournament in Ironwood, Ishpeming missed its first chance to wrap up the District 11 title as Portage Lake’s Kevin Bostwick allowed just two hits while striking out 11.

Elias Rajala hit a two-run homer for the winners, who won for the fourth time in the elimination bracket.
