MAPS board OKs pay increase for non-union workers

MARQUETTE – The Marquette school board on Monday approved a pay increase for the district’s non-union employees.

The board voted 4 to 2 in favor of the employees’ proposal, with board members Laura Songer and Jean Hetrick voting against it.

Board Secretary/Treasurer Mike Kohler did not attend the meeting.

The agreement calls for a 1 percent increase on base salary and a one-time stipend of $750 for administrative support personnel and a $500 one-time stipend for administration.

According to information in the board’s meeting packet, the agreement will cost Marquette Area Public Schools an additional $8,278.82 for the 2013-14 school year.

In other action, the board unanimously approved a letter asking the Michigan High School Athletic Association to change its rules governing the state’s soccer season, which keeps Upper Peninsula schools from participating in the state’s annual tournament.

It also voted unanimously to approve keeping the appropriations committee and the superintendent’s evaluation ad hoc committee going through the end of October.
