3 injured in weekend rollover crash
MANISTIQUE – A Minnesota man is in serious condition today after a weekend rollover accident on U.S. 2 near Manistique.
According to the Michigan State Police, Austin Balfany, an 18-year-old Minneapolis resident, and two passengers were injured when the eastbound minivan he was driving crossed the centerline and collided with a westbound semi truck just west of the city of Manistique.
Police said the van rolled several times before coming to rest in a roadside ditch. Balfany and Stephanie Fischbach, an 18-year-old woman from Blaine, Minn., were transferred to Marquette General Hospital. Fischbach was treated and released, while Balfany remains hospitalized in serious condition. A third passenger was treated at Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.
The loaded semi truck, which was driven by 69-year-old David Church of Detour Village, left the roadway following the crash and the highway was closed while the vehicle was removed. Church was the only person in the truck and was not injured in the accident.
Assisting at the scene were Manistique Public Safety Fire Department and EMS, the Thompson Fire Department, the Schoolcraft County Sheriff’s Department, the DNR and staff from Schoolcraft Memorial Hospital.
The crash remains under investigation.
