3rd-inning rally lifts Blues
MARQUETTE – A single, wild pitch and an error led to a three-run rally in the third inning that lifted the Marquette Blues to a 9-6 victory over the Escanaba Cubs on Friday evening.
Playing their Mid-Pen League game at Haley Memorial Field in Marquette, the three-run rally broke a 5-5 tie and put Marquette ahead for good.
A sacrifice fly by Devon Olsen and squeeze bunt by Tyler Skufca helped the visitors scored three times and tie the score in the top of the third.
In the bottom half of the inning, the first two Blues batters were retired by Esky reliever Andrew Sedlar, who had come on Olsen.
Back-to-back walks put two on as Hunter Larson singled to knock one home. Then a wild pitch scored another and error brought in a third.
McKinley Larson not only went the distance in getting the pitching victory, but he collected two of his team’s seven hits at the plate, knocking in a run and scoring another. On the mound, he allowed seven hits and four walks while fanning seven.
Sedlar took the loss in his 1 1/3 innings, allowing just one hit but five walks while striking out two. Olsen gave up six hits and two walks and fanned three. Tyler Skufca worked the final 2 2/3 innings, allowing a run but not a hit with two walks and 2 Ks.
Teammate Riley Lynch also had two hits and scored twice, while Derek Stone had just one hit but collected two RBIs. Ryan Hanson had the game’s only extra-base hit, a triple, and had an RBI and run scored.
Escanaba’s Nick Vandermissen was 2 for 4 with two runs scored, while Olsen, Skufca, David Falish and Brandon Punzel collected RBIs.
Each team had seven hits and committed two errors.
