U.P. authors to gather for Marquette event

MARQUETTE – Upper Michigan authors from all ends of the peninsula will gather Saturday for the inaugural U.P. Authors Day Book Fair at the Westwood Mall. All authors who live in or write about the U.P. are welcome to participate to have a chance to meet their current and future readers.

According to organizers, U.P. Authors Day is an event intended to raise awareness of the rich tradition of writing about Upper Michigan and introduce readers to local authors. The event is the brainchild of Lon Emerick, award-winning author of such favorites as “The Superior Peninsula” and “Paradise, North” and is being organized by members of the Upper Peninsula Publishers and Authors Association in coordination with the Westwood Mall.

Tyler R. Tichelaar, president of UPPAA, said invitations have gone out to more than 100 authors of U.P. literature, many of whom live in other parts of the country, but all of whom hold the U.P. in their hearts.

Gretchen Preston, author of the “Valley Cats” children’s book series who is helping to coordinate the event, said in a news release: “When we began to compile a list of U.P. authors, we were amazed by how many there were. We have invited dozens of authors besides the more than 60 members of UPPAA, and they all write about a host of diverse topics.”

“The Westwood Mall is excited to be hosting this event,” said Ellen Sargent, manager of the Westwood Mall. “We know both our local customers and area visitors will really enjoy getting to meet the authors. I think people might be surprised by the wide variety of works available.”

A short list of U.P. authors who are already planning to attend include Preston, Tichelaar, Ida Nord, Kevin and Randy Kluck, Deborah Frontiera, Donna Winters, Kathy Kuczek, Mary Soper, John Parlin and Karl Bohnak.

The book fair is an all-day event. Book sale hours are from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday. Authors are asked to be in attendance the entire day. The registration fee for a table is $50. Authors who want more information and a registration form may contact Tichelaar at or call 226-1543.
