David M. ‘Monk’ Lowden

CASPIAN, Mich. – David M. “Monk” Lowden, age 76, of Caspian, MI, passed away suddenly on June 30, 2013 at his home in Caspian.

Dave was born May 23, 1937 in Caspian, MI, where he grew up with the river rat gang. He was a 1955 Graduate of Stambaugh High School and served four years in the United States Air Force. He was a member of the American Legion clubs in Little Lake and Stambaugh, MI. While in the military, Dave spent two short tours in Alaska and held a top secret security clearance for refueling the U2 spy plane.

After leaving the military, he worked for the Allen-Bradley Co. in Milwaukee, WI, and then worked at K.I. Sawyer in Gwinn, MI. as a civil service worker for 26 years. After K.I. Sawyer closed the Air Force base, Dave then started a job at the Isle Royale National Park where he worked until he went to work for 10 years as a civilian defense contractor in Turkey.

When he moved back to the States, he worked for the DNR in Ishpeming and then as a maintenance worker in Crystal Falls.

Dave loved the woods and spent many hours gardening, hunting, fishing, and picking wild mushrooms and various plants.

Dave also loved listening to Elmers Classic Country Music on Saturday nights and always enjoyed a drink of spirits. He was a life member and altar boy of St. Cecilia’s Church in Caspian.

Dave was preceded in death by his parents, Milton and Pia Lowden.

He is survived by his former wife and lifetime friend, Dixie Lowden; three children, Gail O’Dell of Little Lake, MI, Fred (Jill) Hodgkin of Green Bay, WI, and Jackie (Kevin) Hodgkin of Gwinn, MI; six grandchildren, Derek, Teara, Ashley, Taylor, Brian, and Allen; two great-grandchildren, Alec and AJ and one on the way; two brothers, Kenneth (Pat) Lowden of Milwaukee, WI and Milton “Cookie” Lowden of Caspian; nieces and nephews, Kimberly Krigbaum, Brad Lowden, Kenneth Jr., Jesse Lowden and Miranda Lowden; and several cousins from the Lowden and Bortolameolli families.

A memorial service will be held Monday, July 8, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. at the Jacobs Funeral Home in Iron River with the Rev. Gregory Veneklase to officiate.
